Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement

Here are the essential facts about WISER, the Women's Institute for a Secure Retirement.
  • It is a national organization
  • It focuses exclusively on increasing awareness of the structural barriers that prevent women from fair participation in the nation's retirement systems
  • It strives, through education, to improve women's opportunities to achieve a secure retirement income
Created in 1996 by The Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation, WISER is an outgrowth of the Women's Retirement Initiative. That Initiative is part of the Philanthropies' continuing effort to raise the profile of critical issues relating to pensions and retirement savings, particularly with respect to women.

A 501c(3) nonprofit organization, WISER's role is to educate women. As WISER Executive Director Cindy Hounsell has noted, too many women view retirement as something inaccessible, remote. Not an immediate concern. WISER is working to dispel that false assumption—to make women understand that they must be proactive in their preparation for retirement. WISER is equally diligent in working to make women's pension and retirement needs a primary topic in the nation's policy-making dialogue.
