The Heinz Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan institution. Dedicated to improving the scientific and economic foundation for environmental policy, it focuses on issues related to:
- Environmental reporting
- Global change
- Sustainable oceans, coasts, and waterways
The Center focuses on issues of immediate concernthose that are likely to confront national policy makers within two to five years. Its approach is to create and foster collaboration among the four sectors influencing policy making, including:
- Industry
- Environmental organizations
- Academia
- Government
The Center promotes the active involvement of all four sectors in every phase of solution creation. In its experience, this collaborative approachworking together from problem identification through the crafting of recommendations to implementation of a policyproduces the strongest possible solutions.
The Center was established in December 1995 through a grant from the Vira Heinz Endowment. The Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation has made additional contributions and maintains a close working relationship with the Center.
