Democracy/Citizenship

"A society that acquiesces to the political disenfranchisement of its young people is courting disaster. We need young people's passions and energy to meet the challenges of the next century."
Teresa Heinz
Teresa Heinz was born and raised in Mozambique under a dictatorship regime. Life experience taught her to treasure freedom.

A physical and philosophical world away, life experience brought Senator John Heinz to the realization that "almost all the real vital decisions affecting our lives are made in the public sector." To make a difference, he entered politics.

From disparate environments came a convergence of beliefs: Democracy is precious; the opportunities of free citizenship are powerful; and both require vigorous and constant vigilance.

To that end:
  • The Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation underwrites the Senate Fellowship Program to train new leaders in issues affecting seniors
  • The Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation created the Democracy Project to fight political disenfranchisement
  • The H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management holds fast to the late senator's commitment to serving the public good. Formerly the Carnegie Mellon School of Urban and Public Affairs (SUPA), the Heinz School works to encourage ideals and train our next generation of leaders
  • The Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation supported the distribution of a civics curriculum to more than 60,000 schools. (But truly engaging this generation will take commitment from political parties and candidates, schools, parents, and the young people themselves)
Mrs. Heinz has noted that the word "philanthropy," as originally coined, refers to the generous love of all men (and women), and the inclination to promote the public good. It is entirely appropriate that the Heinz Family Philanthropies works to advance the causes of democracy and responsible citizenship.
