In 1997, Oscar-winning film producers Allie Light and Irving Saraf released Rachael's Daughters, Searching for the Causes of Breast Cancer. The 107-minute-long documentary is the story of seven women, all breast-cancer victims or survivors, working to unearth the causes of the breast-cancer epidemic.
These seven detectives/interviewers travel the country, visiting research centers and contamination sites, discussing and challenging research in the field. They focus on issues including chemical contamination, radiation, and electromagnetic exposure. Twenty-two prominent doctors and scientists in the area of breast cancer research also appear on camera describing, in lay terms, their research into suspected causes of the disease.
Major underwriting for the film was provided by the Teresa and H. John Heinz III Foundation. The film is named in memory of Rachel Carson who, in her 1962 book Silent Spring, warned of the dangers of pollution and sparked the modern environmental movement.
