We operate on the philosophy that good philanthropy requires broad thinking and coalitions representing diverse interests. We embrace collaboration to solve complex challenges. It is an approach you will see implemented time and again in these programs.

We also believe that prudent risk taking is essential. Philanthropies have a tremendous opportunity, often in collaboration with corporate and civic leaders, to test—to pioneer—new ideas. When appropriate, we design our programs as laboratories of societal change.

Some of the programs of the Heinz Family Philanthropies honor the memory, the initiative, and the inspiration of the late Senator John Heinz. They are fueled by the energy and guided by the vision of Teresa Heinz. Other programs are a direct result of Teresa's vision for solving some of the nation's most difficult domestic policy issues.

From the beginning, H. J. Heinz believed in "do[ing] a common thing uncommonly well." We embrace the mandate.
