Senator John Heinz

Senator Heinz's legacy lives on in many ways. Among them: The Heinz School trains tomorrow's leaders, and The Heinz Awards honor leading contributors to a better society. The Senator John Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center celebrates the heritage of Western Pennsylvania.
Senator John Heinz was a patriot, leader, father, and friend. The first in the Heinz family to choose government over business, he employed politics as an agent for positive change. Having earned the opportunity to wield influence, he did so judiciously, and put it to good use.

The senator built a national reputation on three key issues. He was passionate about protecting the environment. He was a champion of the elderly. And he brought the experiences of one of the most successful entrepreneurial families in America to bear as a policy maker in international commerce.

John Heinz could have frittered away his time, indulging in fortune and privilege. Instead, he labored to make a difference in this world—to be an empathetic advocate and produce results. The Heinz Family Philanthropies exists in large part to honor his memory and continue his efforts.

"More than anything else, John Heinz believed in the power and promise of good government. Where others were cynical, he was creative. Where others gave up, he persisted. He simply believed that there was a proper role for government, and he demanded that it be efficient, effective, and compassionate." — Senator Tim Wirth (D-Colorado)
